Five Seattle Food Happenings

From Courtney Shannon Strand, About.com Guide   June 5, 2009

1. KuKuRuZa Gourmet Popcorn has partnered with Fremont Outdoor Cinema to create a new limited edition popcorn flavor, called Fusterclucks. It's a mixture of movie-goers' favorite snacks clustered together into one wacky treat. It's only available throughout the summer. Find Golden Tickets hidden in select bags of the popcorn and you can present it at the event entrance to receive special priorities.

2. Chipotle's is sourcing at least 35 percent of one ingredient at every store from small to midsize farms within 200 miles of the restaurant. All nine Seattle-area restaurants will receive green bell peppers and jalapenos from Fewel Farms in Prosser, Wa., red onions from River Point Farms in Hermiston, Ore. and oregano from Herbco in Duvall, Wa. Chipotle will also be feeding farmers with hot burritos during its farmer appreciation days at local farmers markets this summer. After each farmer appreciation day, Chipotle will host a fundraiser at the local restaurant to give back to the farmers market.

3. Sound Bites Sauce & Spread Co. has introduced a line of hummus, chimichurri and crackers made from all natural and local ingredients grown in Washington state. The three flavors of hummus include: Chardonnay White Bean Hummus, Merlot Red Bean Hummus, Riesling Garbanzo Hummus. Two flavors of chimichurri include del Norte con Cabernet Sauvignon Oil and del Norte con Lime Riesling. Cracker varieties include: Cabernet Sauvignon Pepper, Chardonnay Camelina and Roasted Garlic Chardonnay.

4. Cupcake Royal is expanding to Capitol Hill. The new location will be at 1111 E Pike Street and owner Jody Hall anticipates opening the last week of July. The new bakery will be nearly three times the size of Cupcake Royale’s current World Headquarters in Ballard. And updates to the cupcake recipes are in the works for the store opening.

5. The Attic Lounge at Salish Lodge & Spa, overlooking Snoqualmie Falls, is offering a new seasonal Happy Hour. Drink specials include 50 percent off wine flights, such as Buty Winery Flight: A True Taste of Washington Terroir and five dollar specialty cocktails. Happy Hour is available Monday through Friday from 4-6 p.m.
