In 1889 two men named Joe Pearsall and Frank Peabody discovered gold and silver bearing ore in the mountains outside Monte Cristo. Between 1889 and 1907 the town produced millions of dollars in ore with the financial backing of John D. Rockefeller. Today the "ghost town" of Monte Cristo offers a fun hike for history lovers.
