Photos: January 2009 Flood in Western Washington

Western Washington rivers and streams coupled with heavy rain and snow melt overflowed into local Puget Sound area neighborhoods, roads, and highways (January 2009). The following are photos of the damage north of Seattle from Interstate 5 (I-5) to Arlington, WA (in Snohomish County) to Old 99 and around to Highway 9. Road closures across the Puget Sound due to rising water levels by the Stillaguamish River threatened stretches of I-5 (northbound) and the Cowlitz River (in Lewis County) closed other stretches of I-5 (southbound). The flood waters reached record heights with road closures from flooding and avalanches blocking entry and exit into and out of Western Washington and parts of Canada. And over 40,000 Washington residents were instructed to evacuate their homes.
