As the start of the school year approaches, back-to-school sales are on the minds of many. Great deals and sales can be found at stores all over the Puget Sound from Walmart to Target, Fred Meyer to JCPenney, but there is more to getting back to school than sales (yes, hard to believe, I know).

There are always kids in need, foster kids, and other children who may be heading back to school without the right supplies. If you want to help out, the Seattle area has many school supply drives, most of which make helping as simple as buying an extra pack of pencils or a notebook and dropping it in a box.

Fred Meyer Back to School Supply Drive: All Fred Meyer stores have donation boxes right in their stores. Buy an extra school supply or two and simply put them in the box.

Sleep Country Foster Kids School Drive: Sleep Country hosts drives throughout the year to benefit local foster kids. For this drive, you can either bring school supplies to any Sleep Country store in the region, or donate online and Sleep Country will use the money to purchase school supplies.

Project Cool: Project Cool helps homeless kids in Seattle and all of King County, and ensures they have backpacks and school supplies. In 2011, 1,792 kids were given backpacks and supplies! Project Cool takes donations, or you can sign up to host your own supply drive at your workplace, community group, or school.

Treehouse For Kids: Treehouse for Kids ensures that local foster kids have what they need to start the school year off right. If you want to help, you can donate online or host your own drive.

MOMS Club of Seattle NW: The MOMS Club of Seattle NW is a community group of moms helping other moms. Each year, they host a school supply drive for Treehouse for Kids.

Salvation Army: The Salvation Army awards thousands of Target shopping sprees to children across the nation each year.

St. Vincent de Paul School Clothes for Kids Drive: This Catholic volunteer nonprofit organization collects school supplies until mid-August at its King County office at 5950 Fourth Avenue South.
