Tacoma Bakeries

Tacoma bakeries range from cute little cupcake shops to cake studios where you can find amazingly beautiful wedding cakes. They can be great places to head out for dessert and a cup of coffee as well, as some of the cake studios offer slices of cake if you just want to try it out. If you want something a few steps up from Cinnabon, these places are for you!

Hello Cupcake
Located downtown on Pacific Avenue, very close to the UW – Tacoma campus, Hello Cupcake Tacoma has everything a cupcake shop should have—it’s really cute, the cupcakes are all lined up behind a glass case for you to drool over, and there’s some good people watching from their large front window. Hello Cupcake does not offer much beyond cupcakes and a few beverages, but that’s the beauty of this place. Cupcake flavors include the basics of chocolate and vanilla in a few combinations, along with red velvet, carrot cake, coconut, and seasonal special flavors like lemon or pink champagne. The real kicker at Hello Cupcake are the frostings—handmade buttercreams. They are rich and delectable.

Celebrity Cake Studio
Celebrity Cake Studio is the place to go for wedding and other event cakes and desserts—it was voted Best Wedding Cakes of Western Washington winner by King5 in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Located in Freighthouse Square near the Tacoma Dome, this unassuming shop produces possibly the most artistic cakes you will find in Tacoma. Wedding and other event cakes come in a wide variety of cool flavors, from standards to lemon, lime, vegan chocolate, and gluten-free red velvet. Cake fillings and frostings also range from standard to amazing, with Kahlua, passionfruit, and Belgian truffle among the more unique. The bakery also makes an array of individual desserts, including many flavors of petit fours, mini wedding cakes, and tarts.

Corina Bakery
Corina Bakery is great for a walk-in treat or as the place to order your next event cake. Artistic and tasty cakes come in a variety of flavors, some of the cooler ones being lemon coconut, The King’s Favorite (banana cake, peanut butter frosting, and chocolate ganache), and The Aztec (chocolate cake with cinnamon, cayenne, and ginger). But Corina goes beyond event cakes and is also a great place to stop by and sit down. They have a seating area in their bistro located not far from Wright Park on 6th Avenue. Lots of sweet treats await, but so do some savory ones as well. Scones, cupcakes, cookies, pies, and breads are just some of what they have on tap here. Gluten-free, vegan, and low sugar options are all available.

Affairs Chocolate and Desserts
Affairs is a chocolate lover’s dream with a rich array of chocolate cakes, hand-made truffles, and desserts, but they have many other flavors as well. Their impressive menu of sweet treats includes a list of cheesecake flavors almost as extensive as the Cheesecake Factory’s! Affairs is also a caterer and can bring a full menu of delights to your next event, or you can come sit in their café and enjoy the array of deliciousness in person.

Metropolitan Market
Metropolitan Market is a regional grocery chain, but their bakery can give almost any bakery a run for its money. Some of their items are brought in from local or even international bakeries as well, expanding the selection. Breads from Paris, cookies from a local baker, or brie and brioche baked right onsite are all just some of the selection here. They also offer cupcakes and whoopee pies that fit nicely with a sunny day in their outdoor seating area. Met Market is located in Proctor so it is ideal for outdoor seating.

Jubilee Cupcakes & Vintage Candy
While Hello Cupcake is perhaps the better known of the cupcake shops in town, Jubilee offers a more adventurous array of cupcakes. You will also be hard-pressed to find prettier cupcakes in Tacoma! Jubilee does not make the same flavors (beyond the standards) every day so you will often find a different selection each time you come in. Unique flavors include lemon meringue (with lemon filling and meringue frosting), hummingbird (pineapple coconut), salted caramel, s’more, and macon bacon (chocolate cake, maple frosting, and real maple bacon). Their seating area is small but cute and the shop is located just next door to Metropolitan Market in the Proctor District.

Pioneer Bakery and Deli
If you live in areas like Parkland, Spanaway, or Puyallup, driving all the way into downtown Tacoma or North Tacoma for a cupcake might seem like a bit much. Pioneer Bakery and Deli is located more in your neck of the woods. They do wedding cakes (and provide a free anniversary cake if you don’t want to eat year-old freezer cake). You can also go inside and enjoy lunch at this bakery and deli. They make a variety of breads from dinner rolls to sun dried tomato focaccia. Unlike most of the other bakeries on this list, they also offer a full lunch menu of sandwiches, soups, and more.
