The Pantages Theater in Tacoma is Tacoma’s oldest theater. Situated in the heart of Tacoma’s Theater District in downtown, this theater hosts everything from local entertainment to world-class performers. The Pantages is one of three venues under the larger umbrella of the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts, which also includes the Rialto and Theatre on the Square. The Pantages and Rialto are located right across the street from each other, while Theatre on the Square is next door.
The history of the Pantages goes back over 100 years. The site where the theater is today has been the site of a saloon and Tacoma’s first department store, but in 1908 the land was purchased, structures there were knocked down, and the Pantages began to take shape. It was finally completed and opened to the public in 1918.
The theater changed names over the years—also called The Orpheum and The Roxy—but was changed back to its original name in the 1980s. Tacoma’s Pantages is just one of several in a chain of Pantages theaters around the country, including the much more famous Pantages in Los Angeles. These were all built by Alexander Pantages to be Vaudeville theaters throughout the early 1900s. It is the oldest of the chain still in operation.

Events
The Pantages hosts a number of shows throughout the year. These include plays, musical performances, and often comedians or other headliners. In the holiday season, “The Nutcracker” is usually on here. Check the venue schedule for current information about what’s on when.
The lobby opens usually an hour before a show, and the theater requests that attendees arrive at least 30 minutes in advance. If you arrive late, you will be seated when there is a break in the show.
Things To Do Nearby
If you take in a performance at the Pantages, you may be in the market for an ideal activity to pair with a show. Within walking distance are a number of casual dining options; these include India Mahal, Paddy Coyne’s, and a Subway and a Tully’s just across the street if you just want a quick bite. However, if you are set to go all out, within less than a five-minute drive are several of Tacoma’s best restaurants—El Gaucho, The Melting Pot, and the Matador. El Gaucho in particular is known as an amazing spot for a night out, but it will cost you. Sixth Avenue also has many restaurant options and is within a ten minute drive.

Parking and Directions
To get to the Pantages, take Exit 133 from I-5 (north or south) toward City Center to Highway 705. From 705, take the A Street exit. Turn left on South 11th Street. To get to the actual theater, take a right on Broadway, but be away there is not a lot attached directly to the Pantages.
There is limited street parking near the Pantages. However, checking for street parking is a good idea as it may be free depending on which day and time you are there.
