Tour de Chocolat/Seattle from the Chocolate Box

From Billy Watson, for About.com

Chocolate Box Seattle

Signature Chocolate Box

Chocolate Box, located near Pike Place Market in Downtown Seattle, has launched a Tour de Chocolat/Seattle in honor of Seattle's other bean: cocoa.

The Seattle Chocolate Tour is nearly 3 hours in length and includes chocolate from five local chocolatiers: Fiori Chocolatiers, Theo Chocolate, Oh! Chocolate, Fran's Chocolate, Chocolat Vitale. Tour-goers also receive a gift bag of samples valued at over $25 and a Tour de Chocolat mug at the end of the tour.

The Tour de Chocolat/Seattle starts in Downtown Seattle at the Chocolate Box and continues to chocolate destinations in Fremont, Madison Park, and University Village passing by many Seattle sites before returning to the Chocolate Box. Seattle Chocolate Tour Tickets are $59 per person ($65 including tax).

The professionally guided tour, designed for groups of 10 or less (or private bus charters for up to 20 people), includes:
  • Fiori Chocolatiers at Chocolate Box, Downtown - Begin with an introduction to the chocolate world and chocolate with Fiori Chocolates, created by former pastry chef Lee Johnson. His line draws on his Asian, Latin and European cooking experience and education from Italy’s Cordon Bleu. Area sights: Pike Place Market, Belltown.

  • Theo Chocolate, Fremont - Seattle’s eclectic Fremont neighborhood is the home of incredibly creative Theo Chocolates. Founded in 2006, Theo is the country’s only known roaster of Fair Trade-certified cocoa beans. Tour the facility and learn about Theo Origin Bars, made of dark chocolate from faraway lands, with cacao ranging from 65 to 91 percent. Area sights: the Fremont Troll, Fremont Bridge and Lake Washington Ship Canal, the village.
Note: Theo Chocolate made Oprah's O Magazine Best list in February 2008.

  • Oh! Chocolate, Madison Park - This historic and exclusive Madison Park neighborhood boasts Oh! Chocolate, started 40 years ago in the tradition of French chocolatiers. Founders Carl and Gertie Krautheim passed their passion for chocolate making to their children, who will greet you in their store and allow you to make your own chocolate delight right on the spot. Area sights: Madison Park’s pristine homes, the eclectic, alternative music hub of Capitol Hill, the colorful Central District, and Lake Washington.

  • Fran’s Chocolate, University Village - Explore the flagship retail store of Fran’s Chocolates, established by Fran Bigelow, who set up her small-batch chocolate production in 1982 based upon European tradition. Her kitchen has become famous for its dark chocolate salt caramels and for a variety of tempting truffles. Area sights: the U-District’s kitsch retail and art-house cinemas, and the lushly landscaped Washington Park Arboretum.

  • Chocolat Vitale at Chocolate Box, Downtown - Back at the starting point, sip premium drinking chocolate from Seattle’s Chocolat Vitale. Inspired by the hot chocolate his Italian grandmother served, Jim Schneider and his wife Jennifer founded Chocolat Vitale to offer fine European drinking chocolate--and amazing chocolate teas--made from Venezuelan cocoa beans (not powder). Area sights: return across from Pike Place Market and city shopping.
Chocolate Box products include sipping chocolates and coffee drinks, chocolate baked goods, and boxed chocolate assortments from the best of Seattle’s artisan chocolatiers, including Theo, Oh! Chocolate, Chocolat Vitale and Fiori. The Signature Box is an affordable gift option that features a popular offering from each chocolatier partner.
